has nominated senator, former seven for chuck hagel of nebraskaa vietnam combat veteran now to replace him. but hagel has been outspoken in the criticism of his party and he may have some difficulty with his confirmation. the other major depature from the cap net, secretary of the treasury tim geithner who over saw the bail out of the auto industry and recovery of the financial system. the president now nominated jack lew to the job, he was a behind the scenes guy, director of the office of management and budget, both in this administration and that of president clinton. that nomination is expected to go smoothly, but there is one high profile and sometimes controversial cabinet member who is staying on. that is attorney general eric holder. he's come under fire from republicans and some of the democrats in congress, some of the justice department policies, particularly a plan to send guns in to mexico. but holder wants to stay and the president clearly intends to allow him to do that. of course, there will somebody other cabinet and senior staff changes soon, but many of the same clos

chuck hagel is confirmed as his replacement. but i do want to make the point here, there are going to be growing pains. and we're hearing the same kinds of arguments oh, my god, you know, women are going to be integrated into the military academies. oh, my god, gays in the military. that's going to destroy unit cohesion. >> that's right. >> but those thinking soldiers, again, even the most hard-bitten combat veterans say this is inevitable. and i just want to point out what one combat trainer who is an army ranger, you know, one of the toughest jobs in the u.s. military, when i asked him, what about this argument that a 10-pound woman can't drag a 200-pound wounded comrade off the battlefield? and he looked at me and he said, how many times do you see a 130-pound man drag a 200-pound -- you know, and that's the sense of the argument. that women and men will work together just like the men work together. and the only thing different about this, while women have been drawn into combat, is this will be policy. this will be official. they will have ground combat roles. and what this wi

appointed both senator john kerry and chuck hagel, internationalists, capable people who really know what they're talking about. second, the administration began lifting by c-17 aircraft french soldier swoz maulo monday. we're providing logistical and intelligence support. and third the administration i think has done very well in engaging egypt. and as we talk, jeffrey, about the stability of the middle east, egypt is the keystone country and a lot is going wrong in egypt but a lot is going right. elected government has kept the peace agreements, the camp david accords with israel and has a working relationship with the united states. i'm worried about a lot of these trends in the middle east-- we haven't even talked about the civil war? syria-- but i do think the administration is focused on this. the president has a working relationship with president mohammed morsi. israel has to meet a lot of these tests. they'll need american support. and i think we are seeing an engaged, sophisticate administration at work. >> brown: all this, of course, danielle pletka, goes to the sort of continu

of state, john kerry, and chuck hagel, which he has gone a lot of flak for it, to the secretary of defense? >> those are promising choices. john kerry may finally liberate himself with a push from chuck a goal. they are going to have to take on the military-industrial complex and reduce those mass of weapons systems that were designed for a soviet-peristyle hostility like the f-22 and nuclear subs. they're going have to cut the military budget down from its $800 billion, and get out of afghanistan and iraq. and whether they have the chemistry and the political fortitude to do so, it remains to be seen. but i think they are a better choice than their predecessors. i think john kerry will be better than hillary clinton, who had to be macho all the time. and panetta, chuck hagel will be better than panetta, who was kind of a fill in. and spent weekends back in california where he really wants to retire. there is a little promise there. but again, it requires the resurgence of mass demonstrations in washington this spring to develop a convergent policy from the militarization of foreign-policy
